Hello All,

Governor Patrick wants to get the power from the state Legislature in order so he can raise your fees on driver's licenses, title, registration, and more. I urge you to write a letter to your state rep. and senator urging them not to fork over their power to the Governor's office. As you know the state legislature is the People's elected representative body and is (supposed to be) accountable to them. The Governor then leaves the door open to another round of fee increases in October. I have attached a sample letter you can use to borrow a framework for your own letter. I am sending it to my rep and senator so don't use it word-for-word, change it up and add your own ideas and opinions.

Today I received a reply from Rep. Puppolo. Two day turn around, I am very impressed. Handwritten too! Anyway, he informed me that the Registry has administrative pervue to raise its fees without anyone's approval. I thank you very much for your prompt reply to my previous letter regarding R.M.V. policy to discontinue mailed reminder notices. I appreciate the personal response.

Today I have a similar matter to urge you to act against. The recent talk of Governor Patrick requesting authorization from the State Legislature to raise Registry fees by fiat is concerning to me and many others I speak to in town. If any Governor in the future can raise fees with no approval process (bills in the House and Senate), the People of this State would truly lose. Taking power away from the People’s elected bodies of the Legislature and giving it in the hands of one person is risky and goes against the spirit of Massachusetts’ founding. I urge you to vote no on all movements/bills which would give the Governor’s office power to raise Registry fees as well as any other measure to take any powers away from the Legislature.

I am against raising any of the Registry’s fees because the producers of this State are required to have driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations to conduct their businesses, commute to and from work, transport raw materials, deliver goods to stores, etc. Driver’s licenses were instituted with a small fee to ensure those who were on the road knew how to drive safely and knew the rules of the road. It was not instituted to pay down debts, raise revenue, or for any other financial purpose. Now, we see this being used again to raise revenue. It’s amazing how many licenses and taxes started out small and served a purpose, but now are being raised (by large percentages) to raise revenue.

The People of this State are not responsible for Big Dig corruption debts, MBTA mismanagement and any of the other reasons used to justify increases in the gas tax, Pike tolls, Registry fees, etc. Do you agree with me? I would like your perspective on this idea. I look forward to your reply on this matter and thank you for your time.

Do you have any ideas about what we should say to affect the registrar. She is not elected and therefore is somewhat insulated from popular pressure.

As a state national, I am serving Rachel the Registrar with the return of my registration and plates including affidavit and authorities as part of my status correction process.

Oh, I don't know... maybe you could talk about how Driver's Licenses and Registration are not needed by sovereign people and how the whole system was forced upon the people in the 20s by trickery... That will get her attention. But then again, she is a former state representative and therefore, now, a political hack.
